What is it?

Videostroboscopic Evaluation of the Larynx

Abnormal vibration of the vocal cords often contributes to the voice problems of persons diagnosed as having hoarseness or laryngitis, yet this cannot always be detected by conventional diagnostic techniques. Examination of the larynx with mirrors, fibre-optic endoscopes and air flow studies can fail to reveal the exact cause or severity of certain types of vocal pathology. This is largely because most techniques for evaluation of vocal function require clinicians to base their finding indirectly on their observations of the speech-wave form. An exception to evaluation techniques is VIDEOSTROBOSCOPY, in which a permanent image of the motion of the vocal cords is recorded.

VIDEOSTROBOSCOPY is one of the most valuable techniques available for clinical examination of the larynx. It provides an immediate image of the vocal cords as well as a permanent visual and auditory record.

VIDEOSTROBOSCOPY is usually done with the presence of trained observers - laryngologists (medical specialists in voice disorders), speech-language pathologists, vocal coaches and singing teachers. As a result, a true clinical evaluation by the professional voice team is obtained. The information generated gives the viewer a virtual image of the vocal cords' shape, movement and vibratory pattern. Obvious pathology is clearly seen, and in addition, subtle functional and structural abnormalities, not visible to the unaided eye, are clinically evident.

The videostroboscopic recording can be played back instantly, creating a wonderful teaching tool for the voice user. Using the latest in computerized technology, Dr. Hands and the professional voice team at VOX CURA can accurately diagnose abnormalities of your vocal cords and develop a program specific for your particular voice problem. Respiratory and hearing functions are also addressed.

How Much Does It Cost?

VIDEOSTROBOSCOPY and voice assessment are inexpensive. It is not a benefit of OHIP but most third-party insurers provide a significant amount of coverage. You must check with your individual carrier.
